4 Things My Windows Mobile Phone does that iPhone doesn't
The iPhone has dominated the mobile news wire for a few years but I have been steadily focused on sticking with my windows mobile phone. Yes, there are a few of us left. After playing with my wife's iPhone for awhile, I started to envy how user friendly and cool it is; and , and how un-cool my windows mobile phone seems by comparison.
The more I used the iPhone, the more upset i became with my windows phone and started demanding "Why can't I do this on my phone?". For instance, the iPhone offers tons of "apps", while the windows platform only offers a few. However, the windows apps are very useful and work great on my phone. They include fring.com, evernote.com and dashwire.com. This pales in comparison to the zillion iPhone apps, but I am content. In addition, I also wanted to see what my phone can do better than iPhone.
What my phone can do that an iPhone can't:
1. Tethering
2. Run more than one app at a time (background processing)
3. Support multiple browsers (IE, Opera, skyfire, Iris)
4. Use a storage card for music, pics, etc
TetheringTethering was the #1 reason I bought the Samsung Black Jack instead of an iPhone. Being able to get on the internet with my laptop from anywhere, at anytime is a very big deal for me. I drive to work, and often travel or need to access my data from anywhere around town.
Running Multiple Applications
Being able to run multiple apps at once is more important than I originally realized, as it helps in being more productive and connected.
Multiple Browsers (or browser engines)
This might not be a very strong point as the browsing experience on the iPhone is pretty solid, but I am happy to have this feature nonetheless. Storage CardRemovable storage cards are invaluable in today's world. I couldn't live without it since I am always mobile and need to transfer data back and forth between multiple data sources. Conclusion
For me the real lesson here is not to be motivated by 'tool envy'. For windows mobile users I think it takes a bit of effort to find the things that make the phone better, and it's a shame that Microsoft hasn't made this process easier. Once the iPhone has tethering, and has truly figured out the Microsoft Exchange connectivity issue, it will be much harder to justify buying anything other than an iPhone.
